I recently had the fortune of seeing Spiritualized live and they were every bit as good as the last time I saw them. Their light show wasn’t as hypnotic or intense this time but the music was intensely hypnotic and hypnotically intense. With layers of feedback, delay, organ, piano, and vocals courtesy of backup singers, the 7 members tore through a nearly 2 1/2 hour set that included a mix of songs spanning their career.
The new album Sweet Heart Sweet Light was not the primary focus of the evening but the four songs played from it translated well to the live setting. Also played were songs from previous Spiritualized albums Songs in A&E, Amazing Grace, Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, and even Pure Phase. The night ended with a beautifully haunting version of So Long You Pretty Thing before sliding into the full 17+ minute version of Cop Shoot Cop.
NPR is streaming a full audio recording of their concert in Washington D.C. at the 9:30 club from May 10, 2012 and streaming 30 minutes of video from the same show here.
