Marking his return, perhaps the most recognized of Paul Frankland’s aliases Woob has released a new album titled ‘Adaption’ that exposes a slightly different side of his musical output. To say this is an unexpected direction wouldn’t be fair because Paul has such a mastery of his tools that every one of his releases seem to traverse into brand new territory. Much like previous works ‘Tokyo Run’ and ‘Return to the City’ were inspired by and possibly meant to serve as a soundtrack or accompaniment to a work of fiction, Adaption is a soundtrack to an unnamed fictional story. In the words of Woob himself:
‘Adaption‘ is a psychological thriller / horror musical adaptation of a story centered around a small coastal town’s abandoned video-arcade that mysteriously springs to life after midnight transforming all its unsuspecting visitors into the undead.
Adaption is at times more energetic than previous Woob releases, but don’t you dare call it upbeat. This is an adaptation of a horror story after all, and it never steers away from its spooky and suspenseful intent. It is unmistakably Woob with its dark cinematics, morphing synths, and film dialog sampled from obscure movies presented in a way that only Paul Frankland could do.
Standout tracks include Transmutation which could easily replace any existing soundtrack to a number of John Carpenter films and Dead End (my personal favorite) with its evil synth stabs and overwhelming sense of isolation.
Here’s a teaser of the album:
